If a cable has snapped, frayed or slipped off its drum on a warehouse, shop or loading dock door, stop using the door and call us. In Edmonton and Nisku we repair and replace commercial overhead door cables, and we check the drums, springs and brackets in the same visit, because a failed cable rarely fails alone. We quote the work in writing before we start. Call 780-908-0907. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Commercial door cables carry the weight of the door and connect to springs under high tension. A door with a failed cable can drop or twist without warning. Do not stand or walk under the door, do not try to lift or lower it, and do not loosen, cut or re-thread a cable. Block off the opening, keep staff and vehicles clear and call a technician.
On a sectional commercial door, a steel cable runs from a bracket at the bottom corner of the door, up the side of the track, and winds onto a drum on the shaft above the door. The springs turn the shaft, the drum winds the cable and the door lifts. Two cables, one on each side, share the load.
High-lift and vertical-lift doors use longer cables and larger drums, because the door travels further before it stops. Either way, if one cable fails, the door loses its lift on that side and can go crooked or jam in the track.
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| A cable hangs loose, or lies on the floor | The cable has snapped or come off the drum |
| One side of the door hangs lower | A cable on that side has failed or slipped |
| The door jerks, or the operator struggles | A cable is binding or a drum is worn |
| Broken strands, or a fuzzy, frayed look on the cable | The cable is wearing out |
| Rust or a polished shiny spot on the cable | Corrosion or a rubbing point |
| A kink or a bird-cage bulge in the cable | The cable was overloaded or went slack and tightened again |
| The door runs crooked in the track | Cables are uneven, or a drum is damaged |
| A cable is loose at the bottom bracket | The bracket has corroded, or the cable has pulled out |
A frayed cable can hold for a while, but it will not hold forever. Book a repair as soon as you see broken strands.
A failed cable is a sign to check the whole lift system.
| Part | What we look for |
|---|---|
| Both cables | Fraying, rust, kinks and wear at the same spot |
| Drums | Worn or sharp grooves, cracked flanges and a loose fit on the shaft |
| Bottom brackets | Corrosion, bending and a loose anchor point |
| Springs | Breaks, uneven tension and cycle life. See commercial spring repair. |
| Shaft and bearings | Bends, wear and noise |
| Tracks and rollers | Bends from an impact, and loose track brackets |
| Door sections | Cracks near the bottom corners |
We replace cables as a pair. If one cable has snapped, the other has done the same work for the same number of cycles and is often close to failing. A new cable next to an old one also pulls unevenly, which tilts the door and wears the drums. On a commercial door, a second failure means a second call and more downtime.
A cable that has only jumped off its drum can sometimes be re-seated. A frayed, rusted, stretched or snapped cable cannot be repaired. We tell you which one applies after the inspection and before any work starts.
Cables and drums wear together. We recommend new drums when:
The drums must match on both sides, or the door runs crooked. Replacing worn drums with new cables is cheaper than a second visit.
Releasing spring tension is the dangerous step, which is why we do not recommend that a customer or staff member does this.
Commercial cable work is quoted after an assessment, because the price depends on the door and what else is worn. Here is what changes it:
| What affects the price | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Door size and type | Standard lift, high lift and vertical lift doors use different cables and drums |
| Cable length and size | Longer, heavier cables cost more |
| Drums | Worn drums add parts and time |
| Brackets | Corroded or bent brackets need replacing |
| Springs | A broken spring adds a separate repair |
| Door position | A door stuck open or hanging crooked takes more time |
| Time of day | After-hours calls are priced when you call |
Doing the cables and a spring check in the same visit saves labour, because the tension release is shared. Our quote is written and fixed before we start.

We repair commercial overhead door cables in Edmonton, Nisku, Fort Saskatchewan, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Leduc and Beaumont.
The price depends on the door type, the cable length and size, the drums and brackets and whether a spring has also failed. We quote it in writing after we assess the door, and we confirm it before we start. Doing cables and a spring check in the same visit saves labour.
No. The door can drop, twist or jam in the track, and the operator can be damaged. Keep people and vehicles clear and call a technician.
Both. The second cable has done the same work and is usually close to failing, and a new cable next to an old one pulls unevenly. Replacing the pair saves a second visit.
The usual causes are wear and rust, a forklift or vehicle impact, a door that hit an obstruction and went slack, a worn drum or a broken spring. A technician can find the cause so it does not happen again.
Often when the grooves are sharp, cracked or gouged, or when the drum slips on the shaft. A worn drum cuts a new cable quickly. We check both before we quote.
A simple cable pair on a standard door often takes a few hours. A high-lift door, new drums, a broken spring or a bent track takes longer. We give you an estimate after the inspection.
A frayed cable that still works can usually wait a short time, but not long. If the door is stuck, crooked or hanging loose, treat it as an emergency. Call us any time, 24 hours a day.
Yes, we repair cables on standard, high-lift and vertical-lift commercial overhead doors. Call us with the door size and a photo, and we will confirm.
