Garage door springs and cables hold stored force, and even a single door weighs well over 100 pounds. If you heard a bang, if the door is crooked or hanging loose, or if a cable is on the floor, do not touch the springs, cables or the brackets at the bottom of the door. If the door is open and something has failed, do not pull the red release handle. The door can drop. Keep people, pets and vehicles clear and call us.

When you call, we may ask you a few quick questions. That helps us decide how fast to send someone.

What to Do While You Wait

  1. Stay clear. Keep people and pets away from the door and anything parked beneath it.
  2. Do not force the door. Do not push, pull or lift a door that feels heavy or crooked.
  3. Stop using the opener. If the door is stuck or crooked, running the motor can strip gears and bend the tracks.
  4. Leave the springs, cables and bottom brackets alone. They hold stored force.
  5. Unplug the opener if you can reach the cord without standing under the door.
  6. Secure the house. Lock the interior door between the garage and the house. If the garage is stuck open, bring bikes, tools and valuables inside until we arrive.
  7. Take a photo if you can do it safely. Note the door size, whether the springs are above the door or along the sides, and any noise you heard.
  8. Do not keep pressing the button. If the door is frozen to the floor, clear the snow from the base and let the seal thaw. Forcing it can break a panel, belt or chain.

Why Forcing the Door Makes Things Worse

An opener is built to move a balanced door, not to lift its full weight. If a spring has broken, the motor works against the whole door and strips the gear. If a cable has snapped, one side hangs lower, and running the opener bends the track and pulls the door off its rollers. Lifting a door by hand after a spring failure is how people hurt their backs and hands. A repair that costs a few hundred dollars can turn into a new door.

Car Trapped in the Garage?

If the door is closed and your vehicle is inside, do not try to lift the door by hand, and do not keep running the opener. Call us and tell us a vehicle is stuck. We will work out whether the problem is a spring, a cable, a frozen seal or the opener. If you want the full steps, read our guide on what to do when a car is trapped in the garage.

What Happens on an Emergency Visit

  1. Make the door safe. Before anything else, we secure the door so it cannot drop.
  2. Find the cause. We check the springs, cables, drums, tracks, rollers, opener and sensors. One failure often points to another worn part.
  3. Give you the price. You get the full price before we start any repair.
  4. Fix it. We replace or adjust only what needs it.
  5. Balance and test. We lift the door by hand to check the balance, then run it on the opener and test the safety reverse and sensors.
  6. Tell you what else is worn. Parts that are not urgent are noted so you can plan.

Most emergencies are fixed on the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, such as for an older or custom door, we make the door secure and tell you when we will be back.

Why Garage Doors Fail on Cold Edmonton Mornings

  • Cold snaps. Steel gets more brittle and grease thickens. Springs often break on the first hard freeze or the coldest morning of the week.
  • Frozen seals. Melted snow can freeze the bottom seal to the slab. An opener that fights a frozen door breaks panels, belts and chains.
  • Ice and packed snow. Snow in the track or against the door stops the rollers.
  • Road salt. Slush and salt corrode the bottom brackets and cables, which then snap under load.
  • Power outages. If the power is out and the door is closed and moves freely, the red handle lets you lift it by hand. If you heard a bang or the door feels very heavy, do not use the handle. Call us.

A fall tune-up catches most of these before winter. See our garage door maintenance service.

Emergency Garage Door Repair FAQs

What counts as a garage door emergency?

A door that is stuck open, crooked, off its track, hanging on a loose cable or unable to close is an emergency. So is a vehicle trapped inside that you need. A closed, locked door with a broken spring is not an immediate danger, but you should not use it.

Do you really answer 24 hours a day?

Yes. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and holidays.

How fast can you get to my home?

It depends on the time of day, the weather and where you are. We give you an arrival window when you call.

Do you charge extra for nights and weekends?

We tell you the full price, including any after-hours charge, before we start. You approve it before work begins.

Can a broken garage door wait until morning?

Sometimes. If the door is closed and locked, nothing is blocked and you do not need the vehicle, a broken spring can usually wait. Do not use the door. If the door is open, crooked, off the track or you cannot secure the house, call now.

Is it safe to use my opener with a broken spring or cable?

No. The opener is not built to lift the door’s full weight. Using it can strip the gear, bend the tracks or drop the door.

What should I do if my garage door is frozen shut?

Stop pressing the button. Clear the snow from the base of the door and let the seal thaw. If the door still will not move, call us so a panel, belt or chain does not break.

Do you handle emergency commercial door repairs?

Yes. We repair commercial overhead doors in Edmonton and Nisku at any hour. Block off the opening and keep people clear until we arrive.
