If your garage door will not close, or it starts down and then reverses, the safety sensors are the most likely cause. In Edmonton, most sensor problems are fixed in one visit: we clean and realign the sensors, repair or replace damaged wire, or replace the pair if a unit has failed. A service call and diagnosis typically costs $90 to $130 plus GST, and we give you the full price before we start. Call 780-908-0907 and we will book you in. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Do not bypass, tape over or disconnect the sensors to get the door to close. They are the part that stops the door from closing on a child, a pet or a vehicle. Holding the wall button down also overrides them, so do not make that a daily habit. If a sensor problem leaves your door open at night, call us and we will secure it.
Two small sensors sit on either side of the door, about 15 cm (6 inches) above the floor. One sends an invisible infrared beam and the other receives it. If something breaks the beam while the door is closing, the door stops and goes back up.
Openers sold in North America since 1993 are required to have this protection. When the sensors do not see each other, the opener assumes something is in the way and refuses to close. That is why a dirty, bumped or broken sensor can stop a perfectly healthy door.
Each sensor has a small indicator light. The lights tell you a lot before anyone touches a tool.
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| The door starts to close, then reverses | The beam is blocked, dirty or misaligned |
| The door will not close and the opener lights flash | The opener cannot see the beam (many openers flash the lights 10 times) |
| One sensor light is steady and the other blinks or is dim | The sensors are out of line, or something is blocking the lens |
| One or both lights are off | No power to the sensor, a broken wire or a failed unit |
| Both lights are steady, but the door still reverses | An intermittent wire fault, sun glare or a problem at the opener |
| The door closes only while you hold the wall button | The sensors are not working and the opener is running without protection |
| The lights work in the morning and fail in the afternoon | Low sun shining into the receiving sensor |
A door that reverses when it touches the floor, with the sensors working normally, is a different problem. It points to the opener’s close setting, not the sensors. See our garage door opener service.
These take about five minutes and need no tools:
If a light is still off or blinking after that, stop there. Pushing a bracket around without knowing why can make the problem worse. Our guides on how to fix a garage door sensor and why your garage door won’t close cover the home checks in more detail.
| Situation | What we usually do |
|---|---|
| Sensors are dirty or slightly out of line | Clean and realign, then test |
| A bracket is bent or loose | Straighten or replace the bracket and realign |
| Wire is cut, chewed or loose at a connection | Repair the wire, or run new wire if it is damaged in several places |
| One light stays off with good wire | Replace the sensor pair (we replace both so they match) |
| Sensors are more than 10 to 15 years old and acting up | Replace the pair |
| Sensors are fine but the door still will not close | Check the opener, the limit and force settings, and the door itself |
If the opener is old and the sensors are the third thing to fail, we tell you honestly if a new opener is the better value. See our garage door opener installation.

A garage door that will not close leaves your home and your vehicles open. If you cannot close it safely, call us and we will secure it. See our emergency garage door repair or our same-day garage door repair service.
Commercial overhead doors use photo eyes and sometimes safety edges. Warehouses and loading areas have forklifts, dust and vibration that knock them out of line. We repair and replace them on commercial doors in Edmonton and Nisku. See our commercial overhead door service and our commercial overhead door opener service.

The most common cause is the safety sensors. If the beam between them is blocked, dirty or out of line, the opener will not close the door. Check that both sensor lights are steady, wipe the lenses and clear the path. If a light is off or still blinking, call us.
A blinking light on a sensor usually means the beam is blocked or the sensors are out of line. A light that is off means no power or a broken wire. Many openers also flash their lights 10 times when they cannot see the beam.
You can close it by holding the wall button, but the door has no protection while you do. That is a short-term way to close the door, not a repair. Call us the same day and do not tape or disconnect the sensors.
Frost and condensation can block the lens, and cold makes old wire brittle so it breaks or loses contact. Low winter sun can also shine into the receiving sensor. We clean and realign the sensors, repair the wire or replace the pair.
Yes, we replace both together. The pair work as a set, and a new sensor paired with an old one that is close to failing often gives problems again within months.
Most last 10 to 15 years. Dirt, damage to the wire and repeated bumps can shorten that.
Garage door openers sold in North America since 1993 must have an entrapment protection system, and in most homes that means photo eye sensors. Removing or disabling them can also leave you with a safety risk and an insurance question.
